UBC Applied Science (APSC) is pioneering Arctic research and development activities in Western Canada, leveraging its multidisciplinary expertise, Pacific gateway location, and established Indigenous partnerships.

UBC hosts significant Arctic-relevant research in environmental science, engineering, health, and social sciences, complemented by engineering and technology expertise through APSC and partnerships with industry and Indigenous communities. Through six integrated thematic areas, UBC APSC advances critical technologies and solutions for Arctic operations: Arctic shipping and maritime engineering capabilities sustainable energy systems, advanced manufacturing and materials, resilient infrastructure engineering, data security and defence technologies, and human health solutions for remote communities.

UBC's unique Pacific-Arctic perspective positions it as Western Canada's premier Arctic R&D hub, offering the closest major university port access to the Arctic Ocean via the Northwest Passage and comprehensive engineering excellence that complements existing Canadian Arctic research leaders like Calgary's Arctic Institute of North America, Laval's Centre d'études Nordiques, and Polar Knowledge Canada. Our interdisciplinary approach combines world-class research expertise with practical applications, fostering innovation that supports Canada's Arctic sovereignty, economic development, and environmental stewardship while strengthening partnerships with northern communities and advancing Indigenous-led research initiatives.
