UBC Vancouver is located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm people (Musqueam; which means 'People of the River Grass'). UBC Okanagan is situated on traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Syilx Okanagan Nation. The land has always been a place of learning for the Musqueam and Syilx peoples, who for millennia have passed on their culture, history, and traditions from one generation to the next.

Diversity inspires innovation. Inclusion sparks joy and discovery. Equity is the foundation for trusting and productive relationships. Indigenous awareness shapes our relationship to the land and its people.

All of these values are core to who we are as a Faculty, and fundamental to succeeding in our mission to ‘shape the leaders and professions that shape the world.’ So, we celebrate and embrace diversity, inclusion, equity, Indigeneity within UBC Applied Science, and are ensuring EDI.I is embedded in all that we do.

Building upon UBC’s Inclusion Action Plan and Indigenous Strategic Plan, our strategic plan reflects the significance we have given to Inclusive Leadership & Respectful Engagement, and is further brought to life in these strategies:

Work-life culture

Foster a culture which values wellness, balance and joy.

Truth & reconciliation

Demonstrate an authentic commitment to Truth and Reconciliation and value traditional ways of knowing.

Inclusive respectful leaders

Build competencies required to be inclusive leaders and create spaces for respectful engagement.

Advance diversity

Ensure the composition and leadership structures of the Faculty reflects the diversity of the communities we serve.

Our approach

To deliver on these commitments, we are taking action in the following five themes to embed EDI.I into our Faculty's systems and structures:

Students at MOA

We are ensuring faculty, staff and students have the competencies and capacity they need to build respectful, diverse and inclusive communities.

We are committed to listening respectfully to all voices and providing opportunities to engage in dialogue internally, across the university and in our communities.

UBC Engineering students at Imagine Day

We are building systems of support and creating space for health and wellness within our work and learning environments.

We are embedding EDI.I within all levels of our leadership structures and being intentional about recruiting diverse faculty, staff and students.

How will we know we are succeeding? Creating clear metrics and providing accountability and transparency will show us how we can do better.
