Our recent alumni brunch was an intimate yet impactful gathering of five nursing graduates, made possible by the generous UBC Alumni Engagement Fund. Although our group was small, the conversations were meaningful and the connections we rekindled felt all the more special. This brunch was a chance for us to step away from our demanding careers and reconnect with the people who were there at the start of our nursing journeys.
Over a relaxed meal, we shared stories from our different paths since graduation. It was amazing to hear about the various ways each of us has contributed to the healthcare field—whether in clinical roles, research, or leadership positions. Despite the diverse directions our careers have taken, there was a shared sense of accomplishment and pride in what we’ve all achieved.
What stood out most was the supportive atmosphere. With just five of us around the table, the conversation flowed naturally, allowing everyone to open up about the challenges they’ve faced and the successes they’ve celebrated. It wasn’t just a trip down memory lane, but also an opportunity to exchange practical advice and insights that we can take back to our respective workplaces. It was clear that, even though we’ve been working in different areas, our shared foundation from UBC has remained a strong guiding force in our professional lives.
This grant-funded brunch also gave us a moment to think about the future of nursing and our roles in it. We talked about the ongoing changes in healthcare and how we can stay ahead of the curve. Even in our small group, there was a wealth of knowledge and experience that made these discussions incredibly valuable. It was inspiring to realize that, despite the challenges the nursing profession faces, we are all committed to continuous grow and make a positive difference.
The brunch wasn’t just about reminiscing—it was about celebrating how far we’ve come and looking ahead to what’s coming next. The grant allowed us to create a space where we could support each other, share our journeys, and reaffirm our commitment to nursing. Even with just five of us, the impact of this gathering will resonate in our careers and personal lives for years to come.
