Peter Buckland

Recently retired, Peter Buckland’s work as Co-Founder of Buckland & Taylor Ltd. has had an impact on nearly every driver in the Lower Mainland, and many others beyond. Buckland & Taylor (now COWI) has been involved in over 2,000 bridge building projects worldwide: the company employed innovative techniques for refurbishing and strengthening the Lion's Gate Bridge and the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco; was the Independent Engineer for Confederation Bridge to PEI; provided construction engineering for Sheikh Zayed Bridge in Abu Dhabi; and have won many international awards for their work. Peter earned a Bachelor and Master Degree in Engineering from Cambridge University, and in 1992 he received an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from the University of British Columbia. Like his co-founder Peter Taylor, of Buckland & Taylor Ltd., Peter is a recipient of the Order of Canada and the Diamond Jubilee Medal, and he received the APEGBC Meritorious Achievement Award in 1981. Peter has supported the Faculty of Applied Science by giving lectures to the Civil Engineering department, working with the university’s researchers, and hiring numerous UBC Engineering graduates, and spending several years on the faculty’s Advisory Committee.
