
Joy Johnson
Joy Johnson received a BScN from the UBC School of Nursing in 1981. After working as a nurse and then completing her Master’s Degree and PhD at the University of Alberta, she returned to UBC in 1993 as an Assistant Professor where she established a productive program of research focusing on health promotion and health behaviour change. She has obtained millions of dollars in research funding from national funding organizations and has published over 180 papers in peer-reviewed journals. From 2008-2014 she served as the Scientific Director for the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Institute of Gender and Health. Her work has been recognized with numerous awards, including the UBC Killam Research Prize; she was elected a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences in 2005. In 2010, she was recognized as one of BC’s 100 Women of Influence and in 2012 was awarded the Queen Elisabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. In September 2014 she was appointed Vice-President, Research at Simon Fraser University.
