UBC Applied Science 2023/24 Annual Research Report Showcases Impact and Innovation

The UBC Applied Science Research and Partnerships 2023/24 Annual Report provides a comprehensive overview of the Faculty's research initiatives and highlights our commitment to innovation, collaboration and impactful discoveries.
Our Faculty is inherently multidisciplinary, enabling us to address societal grand challenges such as the energy transition, housing affordability and environmental resilience-solutions that are vital for building a sustainable and equitable future. UBC Applied Science also stands at the forefront of innovation. With nearly 200 patents issued in the past five years, our researchers are accelerating the implementation of real-world, economically sustainable and socially beneficial solutions.
“The world finds itself at the intersection of several global challenges. The breakthrough research conducted by Applied Science across both campuses is accelerating scalable solutions for a just transition to a net-zero future," says Dr. Walter Merida, Associate Dean of Research and Partnerships. "Leveraging world-class infrastructure investments and using our campus as a living lab, we have fostered an environment that attracts industry investment into co-developing tangible proofs of concept, critical for commercialization and economic development.”
Key highlights include:
- Doubled research funding: Since 2017, Applied Science has successfully doubled its research funding, reaching an impressive $108 million in 2023. This significant increase underscores the expanding scope and ambition of the Faculty's research endeavours and does not include funding awarded to researchers in SBME, as that is co-managed with UBC’s Faculty of Medicine.
- Leading in industry partnerships: Applied Science continues to lead the way in fostering strong industry collaborations, securing the highest proportion of industry funding at UBC for many years, and accounting for 15% of UBC’s total in 2023. These partnerships are crucial for translating research into real-world applications and driving economic growth.
- Global collaboration: Demonstrating international reach and collaborative spirit, half of the Applied Science research publications have international collaborators or co-authors. This global engagement enriches research outcomes and promotes diverse perspectives.
