UBC engineering experts win four UBC research awards

Four UBC engineering researchers — two based at the Vancouver campus and two at the Okanagan campus — are being honoured with this year’s UBC Faculty Research Awards from the Office of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation.
Dr. Vikramaditya Yadav, an associate professor in chemical and biological engineering and in the School of Biomedical Engineering at UBC Vancouver, is being awarded a UBC Killam Accelerator Research Fellowship. This fellowship supports early-career researchers ready to launch the next stage of their careers. Dr. Yadav, who is also a director of the MEL program in sustainable process engineering, leads a research group in green engineering and medical biotechnology research.
UBC Okanagan School of Engineering’s Dr. Sina Kheirkhah and Dr. Sepideh Pakpour are both receiving UBC Killam Research Fellowships that will enable the pursuit of full-time research during a recognized study leave.
Dr. Kheirkhah is an associate professor of mechanical engineering and runs a lab on combustion for propulsion and power. His lab’s mission is to develop knowledge and technologies that make aviation and power generation engines cleaner, more robust and safer.
Dr. Pakpour is an assistant professor of mechanical engineering whose fundamental research interest is to better comprehend the forces and factors influencing the human microbiome, and how microorganisms interact with their environment, each other and their host. She has also co-led research on using magnetic levitation to detect airborne viruses.
In recognition of her outstanding research and scholarly contributions, Dr. Amanda Giang is being awarded with a UBC Killam Research Prize in Applied Science and Science. Dr. Giang is an assistant professor in mechanical engineering and the Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability at UBC Vancouver, and was recently named a Canada Research Chair in Environmental Modelling for Policy.
Annual UBC Faculty Research Awards recognize investigators who demonstrate excellence in research through a suite of seven annual research awards and fellowships that span all disciplines.
