Two UBC Engineering professors named Canadian Academy of Engineering Fellows

Dr. Julian Zhishen Cheng and Dr. Vincent Wong are among the 57 new Fellows of the Canadian Academy of Engineers (CAE). Nominated and elected by their peers, CAE Fellows are selected based on their career-long service and leadership in the advancement of engineering in Canada and abroad.
The CAE is a national organization that provides advice to government officials and decision makers on matters of critical importance. CAE Fellows ensure that Canada’s engineering expertise and experience benefit all Canadians.
Dr. Julian Zhishen Cheng, a professor of electrical engineering at the UBC Okanagan School of Engineering, is a global expert in optical and radio frequency wireless communication. He has made pioneering contributions to the field, including the first ultraviolet communication system prototype in Canada. One of the most-cited researchers in his field, he was recognized as UBC Okanagan’s Researcher of the Year in 2021. Dr. Cheng recognizes his students as inspiration to continue to push the limits of telecommunications research. He is the founding chair of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Okanagan Subsection and was elevated to their fellowship in 2022. Dr. Cheng is also a fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC) and the Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association.
Dr. Vincent Wong is internationally recognized for his instrumental contributions to wireless networking and energy systems research. A professor with UBC Electrical and Computer Engineering, Dr. Wong has developed innovative resource allocation algorithms for wireless communication networks, as well as demand side management algorithms for smart grid systems. He has contributed to over 260 publications, and he is a co-editor of the book “Key Technologies for 5G Wireless Systems”. He is currently Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications journal and has guest edited several special issues of IEEE journals. In addition to this fellowship, Dr. Wong has been elected as a Fellow of the IEEE and EIC.
The induction ceremony for this year’s CAE Fellows will take place in Montreal on May 27.
