Climate change is undeniably one of the largest impacts of human behaviour and may be humankind’s greatest challenge.

Global warming has already driven higher temperatures and will result in rising ocean levels, increased storm strength and occurrence, and drought that will alter food production, biodiversity, migration and human disease patterns. Every day over 3 billion searches conducted on Google reflect the growing global concern for the health of our planet. And just like you, nothing has weighed more on our students, faculty and staff than the need for urgent and accelerated global environmental action.

But beyond our passion and commitment to finding climate solutions, the unique convergence of engineering, nursing, architecture and community planning places the Faculty of Applied Science squarely at the intersection of health, technology and community and is the engine of environmental innovation at UBC.

Building Sustainably at SALA’s HiLo Research Lab

What if you could actually bend wood into complex architecture? And what if that material for that design came from your local landfill?

Given the housing boom and drive to convert old homes into condo and office developments, the city of Vancouver continues to generate more waste material than ever before. Every year, approximately 218,000 tons of wood, metal and plastic clatter into landfills (Metro Vancouver, 2015 figure).

The UBC School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA) has found new architectural life for these discarded materials. While we continue to scavenge lumber and plastic from the local landfill, we nevertheless require a bevy of sometimes expensive materials for testing and experimentation.

With your support, you can extend the possibilities of architecture for those with limited access and resources, all while helping to salvage our forests and repurpose plastic and paper waste.
