Fifty-eight alumni, family and friends celebrated the 60th reunion for the UBC Engineering class of 1958. We gathered on Friday September 21 for a wonderful luncheon at Shaughnessy Restaurant, in VanDusen Garden. Registration began at 11 AM and within minutes, the noise of happy reunions filled the restaurant.
Alumni came mostly from the Lower Mainland, but Nerida and Rob Roger (Engineering Physics) came from Australia, Sig Saimoto (Engineering Physics) from Kingston,ON, and Margaret and Rod Keech (Mechanical) flew in from Indiana. Others flew in from many parts of B.C. Guests of honour were retired Professors Norman Epstein and John Lund.
Guest speaker was Joe Stott, retired Director of UBC Campus Planning who illustrated the many changes to the campus since its origins, and particularly since 1958.
The reunion was organized by a committee consisting of members from each Engineering department, including
Chemical: Craig Clark; Civil: Bob Dolphin; Electrical: Don Crowson, Ed Frazer (Chair) and Fred Schrack (campus liaison); Engineering Physics: Zelma Moore; Mechanical: Tom Fawsitt (Treasurer), Russ Fraser and Don Swoboda; Metallurgical: Don Gunning (memento).
The Committee has been meeting for the last ten years to organize an annual reunion lunch at the West Vancouver Yacht Club. This year, being our 60th reunion, we opted for a fancier setting, just before Homecoming.
We look forward to seeing our colleagues at WVYC for our 61st reunion lunch in mid-September 2019.
