Board Games, Pizza, and Alumni Networking In Chinatown

Several UBC Applied Science alumni gathered for an evening of board games, pizza, and career discussions. This gathering, made possible by the Alumni Activity Fund, helped recent graduates share experiences navigating the professional world and explore potential career opportunities. Despite a few (understandable!) no-shows, the event was a resounding success.

We had alumni pursuing further studies, working in biomedical start-ups, contributing to energy consulting firms, and even one in the world of audit and assurance! This firsthand look at the career paths of fellow Applied Science graduates was incredibly eye-opening, highlighting the multitude of opportunities available to UBC graduates once they have enteredthe workplace. Over slices of pizza, conversations buzzed with discussions of career paths, emerging industry trends, and potential collaborations. A particularly interesting discussion revolved around the future of sustainable energy, with alumni sharing insights on innovations in hydrogen fuel, offshore wind, and carbon capture technology. It was inspiring to hear about the different ways Applied Science graduates are making an impact.

Board games provided a relaxed and engaging atmosphere, allowing for connections to form beyond strictly professional conversations. The friendly competition and shared laughter fostered a sense of camaraderie – and allowed us to reminisce the times we used to kick back after an intense exam season.

As the evening drew to a close, everyone agreed on the value of such gatherings and expressed enthusiasm for future events. Strengthening the Applied Science alumni network is crucial for professional development and support. This funding opportunity was particularly appreciated, allowing alumni to reconnect with each other and revisit the old memories of studying at UBC. It allowed us to rekindle friendships, foster new connections and build a supportive community. It's a reminder that even though we've all gone our separate ways, we're still part of the same UBC family.

We're already brainstorming ideas for future events that will cater to different interests and provide even more opportunities for alumni to connect. We're hoping to make these gatherings a regular occurrence and a valuable resource for all Applied Science alumni. Looking forward to the next one!
