Biomed student wins 2019 BC MEDTECH Graduate Award
Rohit Singla, an MD/PhD student at the UBC School of Biomedical Engineering, has received the 2019 BC MEDTECH Graduate Award in Biomedical Engineering.
Selected by the Faculties of Applied Science and Medicine in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, recipients of the $1,400 award are recognized for their “entrepreneurial spirit, interest in the local biomedical engineering industry and demonstrated leadership and communication skills.”
The awardee of numerous academic and research distinctions, including two best paper honours and first place in the inaugural Rick Hansen Access Innovation Challenge, Singla has developed augmented reality systems for robot-assisted kidney cancer surgeries and is currently working on intelligent renal ultrasound tools to improve chronic kidney disease and kidney transplantation.
Among other accomplishments, Singla is also the co-inventor of a needle guide to improve the success of spinal anesthesia injections, co-founding a venture, 92 Medical, based on the technology.
