2019 Faculty Awards Reception

On April 23, 2019, members of the UBC Faculty of Applied Science community gathered for the inaugural Faculty Awards Reception.

The event aimed to celebrate not only APSC faculty members who received high-profile awards during the previous year, but also the awardees’ colleagues who had taken the time to nominate them for the awards in the first place.  

Speaking to the gathered crowd, Dean James Olson pointed out that each year, numerous faculty members engage in the nomination process solely to call attention to colleagues’ outstanding work — work that might otherwise have gone under-recognized. These selfless, behind-the-scenes efforts, he said, underlie many APSC successes.

Among the honours received by APSC faculty members over the past year are UBC Killam prizes, fellowships of the Royal Society of Canada and IEEE, the Jeanne Mance Award from the Canadian Nurses Association, and the George W. Housner Medal of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute.
