Welcoming Heather Campbell, new director of SCARP

Heather Campbell, formerly a professor of Town and Regional Planning and an advisor in the Office of the Vice Chancellor at the University of Sheffield, has commenced her five-year appointment as director of UBC's School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP).

One of the world’s foremost planning theorists, Campbell previously headed the University of Sheffield’s Department of Urban Studies and Planning and served as Deputy Chair of both the Research Assessment Exercise Sub-panel for Town and Country Planning and the Education Commission of the Royal Town Planning Institute, the largest planning institute in Europe.

Campbell’s research explores, among other things, how ethical values can be incorporated into public policy relating to city and regional planning and how academics can work more effectively with non-academics to enhance the relevance and impact of their research. 

“Professor Campbell is an outstanding leader and academic who thoroughly impressed the search committee at every step of a rigorous selection process,” says James Olson, Dean of the UBC Faculty of Applied Science (APSC). “I have no doubt that SCARP will continue to thrive under her expert guidance, and I very much look forward to working with her in the coming years.”

A Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences, Campbell holds a BA in geography from Durham University and an MA and PhD in Town and Regional Planning from the University of Sheffield.
