
Joan Anderson
Dr. Anderson, an internationally recognized scholar, is among the pioneers of critical theoretical perspectives and qualitative science in health research in Canada. Over the course of her career, her research and publications have contributed to an understanding of the complex context of health, illness, and suffering. She has collaborated with academics, community and interdisciplinary professional groups, locally and nationally, to provide equitable health care to Canada’s diverse populations. Translating knowledge into policy and practice, and educating future generations of researchers, were top priorities for her. She was one of the leaders in implementing the PhD program in Nursing at UBC and received the UBC Killam Award for Excellence in 2004. The former Medical Research Council of Canada,The Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council were among the agencies that funded the innovative programs of research, which she led.
