Elaine Carty

Professor Emeritus, School of Nursing

Elaine Carty, a graduate of the University of New Brunswick and Yale University, joined the UBC School of Nursing in 1974. Her primary field of research and teaching was maternal and newborn care. As a nurse and midwife she is one of Canada’s leading pioneers on childbearing and parenting issues for disabled persons, the impact of hospitalization in antenatal and postnatal periods, and the importance of nursing and midwifery to normal childbirth. After a career leading the establishment of midwifery in Canada she became the founding director of UBC’s Midwifery Program.

Recognized with a Distinguished Alumnae Award from Yale University, the Award for the Promotion of Research Based Practice from the Canadian Nursing Research Group, and UBC’s Killam Teaching Prize, Professor Carty received an Honorary Doctor of Science from McMaster University in 2013 and then, in 2017, was named to the Order of Canada.
