Doug Horswill
After earning a Bachelor of Applied Science (Mining) in 1971, Doug worked for INCO and Utah Copper, a career trajectory you might expect from a mining graduate. His graduate work in economics, however, led to a stint with the Federal Department of Finance, followed by 20 years in the Public Service. Not only did he serve as the BC Deputy Minister of Finance and Corporate Relations, but also Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources.
In 1992, Doug returned to the mining sector, joining Cominco Ltd. (now Teck Resources Ltd.) as Vice President, Environment and Public Affairs, spending 22 years developing and leading several of Teck’s areas of focus, from sustainability and community relations to health and external relations. He also led Teck's internationally renowned program supporting the provision of dietary zinc to under-nourished children in the developing world.
Over his career, he has served as Chairman of the Mining Association of Canada, Founding Chairman of Resource Works, and several health-based institutions, including Sunny Hill Health Care Centre for Children and CARE Canada. In 2012, Doug was awarded the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal for his service in the international development charitable sector.
