Remembering Emily Selwood and Evan Smith

The Faculty of Applied Science extends our deepest condolences to Emily and Evan's grieving families.

On September 26, 2021, the university community was shocked and saddened to learn of the tragic deaths of two students, Emily Selwood and Evan Smith, who were studying social sciences and engineering at UBC.

Today the University detachment of the RCMP announced that charges have now been filed against the driver in this incident, and released written statements from Emily and Evan’s families.

The Faculty of Applied Science joins the UBC community in extending our deepest condolences to Emily and Evan's grieving families, friends and all who loved them.

We recognize that many of you at UBC would have formed relationships with Emily and Evan. Grief counselling support is available for you to access as UBC students or staff and faculty.

While the two families requested privacy at this time, they also asked that Emily and Evan be remembered for the remarkable people that they were.
