APSC alumni included in global list of highly cited researchers
Two APSC graduates have been named in an annual list of highly cited scientists and social scientists from around the world.
Compiled by Clarivate Analytics — formerly the Intellectual Property and Science business arm of Thomson Reuters — the 2018 list identifies over 4000 researchers across 21 fields who published multiple papers between 2006 and 2016 that ranked in the top one per cent by citations for their field and year in Web of Science, an online scientific citation indexing service operated by Clarivate.
Praveen Linga and Rajnish Kumar earned their doctorates from UBC’s Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (CHBE) in 2009, under the supervision of CHBE professor and department head Peter Englezos. Both are now professors overseas — Linga at the National University of Singapore, Kumar at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras — where their research focuses on developing applications for gas hydrates, or the ice-like crystals formed by water and small gas molecules such as methane.
Harvard University had the largest number of highly cited researchers in the world (186), while UBC, with 33, was the highest-ranked Canadian institution on the list.
