Kyle Stewart of Georgetown District High School is the recipient of the 2018 McEwen Family Teacher Recognition Award presented by the Faculty of Applied Science. Established by Dr. James McEwen (BASc ’71. PhD ’75), P.Eng., and his family, this award highlights teachers that go above and beyond to ensure the success of their students, both academically and personally. Georgetown District High School will receive $5000 for enrichment activities, programs or development and will be allocated a $5000 scholarship for a current high school student to attend UBC.

Nominations of this award are put forth by students, to display gratitude and appreciation for the teachers that have left a lasting impact on their lives. UBC Engineering student Mat Toebes (nominator) reflects on how “Mr. Stewart was the most exemplary kind of person you could imagine in a mentor, teacher and a friend.”

Stewart is an English teacher and International Baccalaureate instructor with a passion and dedication for academics and his students. He has cultivated an environment of learning and openness, driving students to strive for success and thirst for knowledge. Beyond the classroom, Stewart coaches varsity volleyball, mentors students and supports student initiatives. He is also an active contributor to the community, campaigning against bullying and running events like “Relay for Life.”

“He was one of those teachers who you didn’t actually have to have as your teacher for him to have an influence on you. His ability to bring students together in the classroom and on the court had a lasting impact on so many.” says Robbie Abrams, a supporter of the nomination.

“His energy and charisma made being in class a joy, and his passion for his subject made me become enamoured of it as well,” says former student Kiana Klassen. “His confidence in our capabilities both motivated us as well as gave us confidence in ourselves, which allowed us to strive for excellence in our own ways.”

On June 8, 2018 the Faculty of Applied Science held a lunch to celebrate Kyle Stewart’s accomplishments. In attendance were Faculty of Applied Science Dean, James Olson, James McEwen, Jeff McEwen, Kyle Stewart (recipient), Jeanette Stewart, Mat Toebes (nominator), Carol Jaeger (Professor of Teaching and Associate Dean, Undergraduate Engineering Programs), Debbie Woo (Senior Director, Development and Alumni Engagement) and Karen Cheng (Development Coordinator).

“The McEwen Family Teacher Recognition Award is truly a special prize that recognizes the importance of inspiring and mentoring young students to pursue an education and career in engineering” says Applied Science Dean Olson. “Kyle Stewart embodies the spirit of this prize, and has had a tremendous impact on Matt’s life. I am honoured to have been a part of the celebration of their story.”
