- Developing a shared understanding of key concepts relating to EDI.I and anti-oppression;
- Fostering an understanding of how systems of power and oppression arise within individual, interpersonal, and institutional/structural levels;
- Building awareness of our own identities, positionalities, and relationships to power and oppression;
- Exploring how systems of power and oppression arise in our interpersonal relationships; and
- Developing tools to mitigate and dismantle systems of power and oppression at the individual, interpersonal, and institutional/structural levels.
Grounding Anti-Oppression contains 3 modules:
Module 1 - Individual
In Module 1, you will explore identity, intersectionality, and positionality. Then, you will use these concepts to reflect on your lived experiences of power and oppression. You will begin to develop a positionality statement based on your beliefs, actions, and identities. To conclude this module, we will provide tools for continuing your identity journey, as true self-awareness comes with continuous learning.
Module 2 - Interpersonal
In Module 2, you will consider how your lived experiences compare with others. Then, you will explore how differences between social groups can lead to stereotypes, bias, prejudice, discrimination, and finally, systems of power and oppression. You will keep developing your positionality statement by considering your positionality in relation to others and to the land. To conclude this module, we will provide tools for practicing allyship with others.
Module 3 - Institutional/Structural
In Module 3, you will consider how systems of power and oppression are built into our institution and the structure of our society. You will learn how to work collectively with others to dismantle systems of oppression by creating change within your spheres of influence. To conclude this module, you will draft an action plan to carry this work forward.
