Save the Date: National Day of Truth and Reconciliation
September 30, 2021 Intergenerational March for Orange Shirt Day - Joint STEM faculty Event
The federal Truth and Reconciliation Day falls on the same day as Orange Shirt Day. To honour and commemorate both, many of UBC’s STEM Faculties, Applied Science, Land and Food Systems, Science, and Forestry, are planning a joint event. Classes are cancelled and staff have the day off, and we hope this allows many members of our UBC community to join us by participating in an intergenerational march on campus.
We will meet at noon on September 30th outside the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre, where we will have a Musqueam welcome, bannock and tea.
The march will follow a marked pathway along Main Mall to the Reconciliation Pole where our guest Elder/Survivor will address attendees. The route will be lined with informative placards and volunteers will speak to the history of residential schools. The march concludes at the Engineering cairn, where elders and children will be invited to add handprints or messages (COVID protocols allowing) to the painted cairn. We will have words from Land and Food Systems Dean Rickey Yada and Sheryl Staub-French, Associate Dean, EDI and professor of Civil Engineering, Applied Science.
Sept 30th will be the first of a series of events by a joint STEM faculty group - APSC, LFS, FoS, Forestry. Weekly events focusing on the history of Indian Residential Schools and the impacts on survivors will stream out after this initial event.
Orange shirts are currently available for sale at the UBC bookstore and the Museum of Anthropology. We encourage attendees to demonstrate their allyship by wearing an orange shirt.
