From UBC Engineering to the Royal Canadian Air Force

As an aerospace engineering officer with the Canadian Armed Forces, Austin Giles supports the airworthiness and maintenance program of Canada’s CP‑140 Aurora fleet. His path from UBC Materials Engineering to aircraft hangars, international deployments and national‑level fleet management shows how an engineering degree can set you up for a dynamic career serving your country.

What kind of work do you do? 

I’m an Aerospace Engineering Officer with the Canadian Armed Forces, where I support the airworthiness, maintenance and long-term fleet management of the CP-140 Aurora aircraft. My role blends engineering, leadership and operations — everything from understanding the aircraft’s technical systems to managing the teams who keep them flying.

Tell us about your first posting 

After joining the military, I completed basic training, which involves physical fitness, weapons training and leadership development, before starting core training for my occupation as an Aerospace Engineering Officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force. My first posting was at Comox on Vancouver Island, where I was part of the 407 Long Range Patrol Squadron. 

The squadron flies the CP-140 Aurora with its key roles being maritime patrol, submarine hunting and overland surveillance.  

I started out as an Aircraft Production Support Officer, managing teams that support maintenance on the aircraft including a variety of shops such as an engine bay that overhauls aircraft engines, an air weapons training cell who instructs the technicians loading weapons onto the aircraft, and an engineering support section that deals with the auditing of maintenance records and more difficult to solve technical problems. These aircraft have over 40 years in service, so there are many interesting challenges to overcome in order to keep them flying safely.  

I then moved downstairs to the hangar floor as the Aircraft Maintenance Officer, working with a team of all the technicians that maintain the aircraft directly. This involved leading over 120 people conducting maintenance 18 hours a day, seven days a week to enable the planes to fly missions out of Comox, as well as operations out of deployed locations. 

It was a fantastic experience to be involved in day-to-day interactions with incredibly knowledgeable technicians and the broader team, including aircrew and many other supporting occupations that make everything happen. 

The Aurora deploys globally to places like Japan, Italy, France, Norway and Iceland, which makes it a very rewarding fleet to work on.

What are you doing now? 

In July 2024 I was posted to Ottawa in the CP-140 Weapon System Management office, the group that works with engineering experts, procurement personnel, and contractors to manage the airworthiness and life cycle of the entire CP-140 Aurora fleet. 

My job involves managing the primary air vehicle support contract, which includes all the structures and electrical systems on the aircraft. 

I work with civilian contractors who perform third line maintenance, overhaul of components and engineering support for the Aurora. I ensure that the needs of the operational squadrons are met and that the work is completed on time and budget.  

With a replacement for the Aurora now announced, there is also a huge amount of work ahead in managing the transition and winding down a long‑serving fleet. 

What led you to engineering? 

My father was a Logistics Officer and I had an uncle and grandfather who were pilots in the Canadian Armed Forces. It was always my dream to work in aviation or aeronautics like them, and I knew engineering was a path to work in that area. 

I chose UBC for its reputation and location – once I visited the campus, I was hooked! 

As for materials engineering, although this program was not my first choice on enrollment, I was completely sold after taking the introductory Engineering Materials course. Materials engineering has opened up lots of opportunities and I was able to set myself up to work in aerospace engineering through electives in third and fourth year by taking courses in composites, manufacturing, and metallurgy. After I graduated, I worked for 18 months as a quality engineering specialist for STELIA Aerospace in Nova Scotia while I was applying to join the Canadian Armed Forces. I worked on an incredible array of production programs at STELIA and made direct use of my composites engineering courses.

Any highlights from your time at UBC? 

I was on one of the student-led engineering design teams – the human-powered vehicle team – where we built several vehicles and competed in challenges against students from all over North America. 

This was an incredible learning experience for gaining the skills you need on the job – not only technical skills but the professional skills of learning how to manage resources, achieve things on a tight timeline, work with people from outside of your technical area and so much more. 

My co-op positions were also a highlight. I worked in Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie and Richmond in jobs in the construction industry, mining and lab-related work. These experiences were formative in helping me define where I wanted to work and what kind of work I wanted to do.

Any advice for students considering engineering? 

Follow your passion! It can be easy to make practical decisions in the short term which look like they'll pay out, but you have to be in it for the long game. Pursue opportunities – be part of engineering student teams, co-op programs, sports teams, extracurriculars. 

Basically, dabble in lots of things to find out what you like!

And be persistent, even in areas that might not seem like your thing at first because you will learn a lot about yourself and what you actually want to do. 

Any advice for students considering joining the armed forces? 

Be yourself! Everyone can bring a unique perspective and talent to the team and that is not achieved by trying to fit yourself into someone else’s set of expectations.

It’s a very rewarding career choice because you work alongside people with all sorts of backgrounds to solve challenging problems. You’re able to take all the things that you learned at university and previous job experience, augment that through the structured training for your core job and then learn from an incredible group of colleagues.  

As part of the Canadian Armed Forces, you receive solid pay from day one and there is a predictable career progression based on time served and merit. There are jobs across Canada, which is a wonderful way to see what this country has to offer, in some very interesting and atypical work environments.  

There are also so many opportunities you can pursue with an engineering degree, depending on whether you want to be a generalist or apply your technical expertise in a specific area. Your job or occupation title doesn’t have to include the word “engineer” to make use of the knowledge you gain through school.
