Last Friday evening, four of us from UBC’s Master of Engineering Leadership (MEL) 2021 cohort gathered for a dinner reunion. Our small group represented diverse specializations, including Clean Energy Engineering (CEEN), Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (NAME), and Dependable Software Systems (DSS). As we shared stories over dinner, we reflected on our shared journey as students who navigated the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. The evening was filled with memories of adapting to hybrid learning models during this time.
Despite these obstacles—or perhaps because of them—we forged strong bonds that have endured well beyond graduation. What began as classmates supporting one another through pandemic-related challenges has evolved into lifelong friendships. We discussed how UBC’s multicultural environment played a crucial role in our successful integration into the professional landscape. Our conversations also highlighted how the MEL program became a catalyst for significant career transformations.
We shared insights on leveraging our UBC education and peer network to navigate career shifts and establish ourselves in Canada’s competitive job market. In addition, we talked at length about how each of us has stayed connected with subsequent MEL cohorts, mentoring them as needed and extending the spirit of community beyond our own class.
This reunion exemplified the enduring impact of the MEL program, which goes beyond academic excellence to foster resilient professional networks and cross-cultural understanding. As we continue to advance in our respective fields, our shared experiences at UBC remain a cornerstone of our professional and personal growth. The evening served as a testament to how the program’s success lies not only in educating future leaders but also in creating lasting bonds that transcend cultural boundaries and professional disciplines.
