Applied Science Alumni Hit the Court for Games and Good Times

After months of diving into the “real world”, whether designing buildings or writing code, a group of recent UBC Architecture and Computer Science graduates decided it was time to reconnect… through badminton.

On Tuesday, September 9, we gathered at Epic Racquet Sports Club in Richmond for a fun and energetic alumni reunion. It was the perfect way to catch up outside of studios, labs, and Zoom meetings. Whether seasoned players or those who hadn’t touched a racquet since undergrad, everyone came ready to play, laugh, and reconnect.

The vibe? Super chill. We started with some warm-up rallies before moving into casual doubles matches. Teams were mixed and rotated, giving everyone the chance to play with old friends and meet new faces. There were a few competitive moments, but nothing too serious. The real highlights were the laughs, near-misses, surprise smashes, and the shared “wait, how do you score again?” moments.

It wasn’t just about badminton. Between games, people caught up on life since graduation, new jobs, exciting projects, relocations, and, of course, nostalgic memories of campus life. It was inspiring to see the different paths everyone is taking and how our education continues to shape our work and passions.

The evening wrapped up with a few final rallies, sweaty high-fives, and promises to do it again soon. It was a simple summer night, but one that reminded us how strong the UBC community remains, even after we’ve gone our separate ways. We’re already thinking about what to plan next, maybe a hike, a tennis game, or something entirely new.

Thanks to everyone who came out and made it such a memorable night!
