Pursuing advanced research in the bio-products sector through industry partnerships.
UBC Applied Science researchers are dedicated to creating a diverse and robust forest bio-economy based on the integrated production of sustainable fuels, high-value chemicals, pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, and advanced materials. We actively accelerate the bio-economy by discovering, developing, and deploying efficient and climate-safe technologies to convert biomass into all of the products we use in our daily lives – to eliminate our reliance on fossil fuels. Central to this challenge is the realization that biomass utilization requires the co-generation of manifold products – chemicals, materials and energy – from an integrated “bio-refinery” (the biomass equivalent of the petrochemical refinery) to be economically and environmentally viable
