Alumni Recognition Award: Patricia Porterfield MSN 1981
Patricia Porterfield was a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Palliative Care at Vancouver General Hospital in the early nineties. Pat’s questioning mind, critical eye, and openness to learning about different perspectives makes her an exceptional clinician researcher, whose professionalism has been recognized through awards from CRNBC, the BC Hospice Palliative Care Association, and Vancouver General Hospital. hrough reading, attending courses, and conferences, Pat has developed such knowledge and leadership in advance care planning that she is considered one of the province’s “go to” experts in this new area of practice in palliative care. Pat’s dedication, innovative thinking, and advanced interpersonal and communications skills have made her invaluable in significant leadership roles at provincial and national Hospice Palliative Care Associations, and her input as BC representative has been instrumental in the Canadian Nurses Association’s development of special examinations for nurse competencies in palliative care. Pat recognized long before many others, that a “palliative approach” could and should be applied to the care of people with advancing life-limiting chronic illness as well as those close to death; and she has worked tirelessly to promote quality of end of life care in the residential care sector.
