Four UBC Applied Science students receive Women in Tech Scholarships

Four students in the UBC Faculty of Applied Science — Jessica Bo, Esther Lin, Parmis Mohaghegh and Tiffany Quon — have been awarded 2019 Women in Technology and Indigenous Women in Technology Scholarships from the Irving K. Barber British Columbia Scholarship Society.

Each year, the $10,000 scholarship recognizes and supports 10 women (at least one of whom is of Indigenous ancestry) who “are excelling at the study of Computer/Data Science, Engineering or Mathematics at the post-secondary level.” 

“B.C.’s tech sector is one of the fastest growing sectors of our economy and women are underrepresented,” said Melanie Mark, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Training, in the official press release. “In order to move the dial, we need to support and empower women, Indigenous people, and other equity seeking groups so they can fully participate in B.C.’s strong economy.”

Bo is studying mechanical engineering, while Lin, Mohaghegh and Quon are all enrolled in UBC Engineering Physics, a five-year program that provides extensive training in areas such as applied physics and engineering design.

The Women in Technology and Indigenous Women in Technology Scholarships were presented in a ceremony at Science World last week.
