2019 Applied Science Celebration

On the evening of April 11, 2019, members of the UBC Faculty of Applied Science community gathered in the Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre’s Jack Poole Hall to celebrate this year's recipients of the Dean’s Medal of Distinction.

Aimed at recognizing individuals who have “brought high honour” to the Faculty or to one of its member disciplines — nursing, engineering, architecture and landscape architecture, and community and regional planning — or who have otherwise made “longstanding and major contributions to advancing the Faculty’s vision, mission and mandate”, the 2019 Dean’s Medal was awarded by Dean James Olson to eight outstanding recipients:

Geof Auchinleck (BASc ’81), a pioneer in the medical device field

Marilyn Dahl (BSN ’79, PhD ’95), a leader in self-help and advocacy for the hard of hearing and deafened

Les Edgeworth (BA ’48, BASc ’49), an esteemed environmental engineer 

Colin Harris (BASc ’80), one of BC’s most successful technology entrepreneurs

Madjid Mohseni, a leading expert in drinking water quality and treatment

Bryce Rositch, an award-winning architect

Leonie Sandercock, an innovative professor in the UBC School of Community and Regional Planning

And Shelagh Smith, a lifelong supporter and friend of the UBC School of Nursing

The Dean’s Medal was created in 2015 to mark UBC’s 100th anniversary as one of the founding faculties of the university.
