APSC student receives scholarship from Zayo Group and Canadian Engineering Memorial Foundation

Jory Wong

Jory Wong (BASc '18, Engineering Physics) has received the Information and Communication Technology Engineering Award from the Zayo Group, a communications infrastructure services company. Awarded each year in partnership with the Canadian Engineering Memorial Foundation (CEMF), an organization that aims to "[provide] opportunities for Canadian women to become engineers," the $5,000 scholarship honours a Canadian female undergraduate engineering student who has a demonstrated desire to work in information and communication technology engineering.

Wong has been involved with the UBC Farm and UBC Supermileage and currently works with Engineers Without Borders (EWB) Canada, where she planned and executed a youth conference on sustainable food systems in 2016 and organized multiple workshops about EWB’s impact investment models for the 2017 EWB Canada national conference, xChange 2017: Equality in Action. As one of 20 Canadian university students who were selected to be part of EWB Canada's Junior Fellowship Program this year, Wong is spending four months at LishaBora in Kenya to help smallholder dairy farmers reduce costs and increase productivity and income. In her role as Data Strategist, Wong is helping design a data management system "to automate the process of gathering, analyzing and presenting data about customers and internal operations."

EWB Junior Fellows were selected "based on a proven commitment to excellence, to building a more equal and sustainable world, and to taking on a leadership role in their EWB chapter and in Canada upon their return." In 2016, Wong received the CEMF Ambassador Award, which recognizes young Canadian women who are "proven leaders, active volunteers in their communities and mentors to other young women to encourage them to follow an engineering path."

Wong will accept the Information and Communication Technology Engineering Award this September, at the CEMF Networking and Award Event in Ottawa.
