Department of Mechanical Engineering
What is your educational and professional background?
I have a BASc from the University of Waterloo and a PhD from the University of Toronto, both in chemical engineering. My thesis focused on the combined air pollution and climate impacts of gasoline direct injection engines. Following my PhD, I spent two years as a postdoctoral fellow in the mechanical engineering department at Carnegie Mellon University.
I love engineering because of its emphasis on creativity and innovation. My research interests are on the role of technology and policy on air pollution and climate outcomes, and I know that engineers will play a huge role in ensuring a more sustainable planet through their innovative ideas.
UBC is an international leader in sustainability and interdisciplinary research. I love that I’ll have the opportunity to work with diverse groups of people to tackle environmental problems from many angles, ranging from the technical to the socioeconomic. Also, Vancouver is an amazing place to live – I love that the city feels so connected with nature.
What are your research/teaching interests and current projects?
My research program revolves around the development and application of real-world-based tools to quickly and quantitatively assess the impact of our policy and technology decisions on air pollution and climate outcomes, and to use the knowledge gained to support better environmental policy planning. Right now I am working on projects on how connected traffic infrastructure affects air pollution, and on the air and climate impacts of renewable energy in developing countries.
Do you have a favourite item you couldn’t live without?
I am obsessed with tea – I probably have over 30 varieties at home and it has fueled my work for as long as I can remember. A cup of tea is perfect in the morning, before bed or really, whenever. There is a perfect tea for every occasion!
What are you passionate about outside work?
I love to be active whenever I can, and enjoy jogging and hiking. I was also a competitive dancer for 12 years before I started engineering, so I love to dance and attend dance classes. I am also a huge pop culture nerd, so I probably watch too much TV :)
