Mattia Bacca

Mattia Bacca

Assistant Professor

Department of Mechanical Engineering

What is your educational background?

I have a BSc degree in Civil Engineering, an MSc in Structural Engineering and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering.

Why engineering?

I have been always fascinated by mechanisms. I guess also the fact that I played with LEGO more than any other kid I knew played a role.

What are your research interests?

My current research focus is on the mechanics of bio-inspired materials. In particular, contact mechanics applied to the design of gecko-inspired dry adhesive materials.

How do you hope your work will impact society?

My goal is to make a contribution to the development of new technology, of the kind that can change everybody's life.

How do you think your field of engineering will be different 100 years from now?

100 years is too long as a timeframe to make a sensible prediction. In 20 years, a mechanical engineer who does the kind of research I do will have a BS in Computer Science.

Do you have a favourite item you couldn't live without?

I couldn’t live without Chilled Out at 181.fm, an internet radio station for ambient-pop music.

What are you passionate about outside work?

I love music, especially alternative rock. I play guitar.
