SCARP Speaker Series: SCARP's Kelly Clifton and James Connolly

In SCARP's speaker series, starting with SCARP faculty and soon new perspectives and lenses from worldwide experts in planning, we welcome students, faculty, alumni, and planners and friends near and far, to hear new perspectives, network, and ask the pertinent questions of the day.

Kelly J. Clifton is an internationally-recognized expert on transport and land use interactions, travel behaviour, pedestrian modeling, and equity in transportation policy.

Kelly’s research, teaching, and service focus on transportation and how human mobility is shaped by their needs, the built environment, and technology. Her work bridges the fields of transportation planning and engineering.

James Connolly, Assistant Professor, UBC SCARP

How do land-use-based greenhouse gas reduction strategies reorder the local geography of risk for urban residents? Connolly challenges the notion that urban climate planning is primarily focused on risk reduction, focusing instead on the ways in which it is directing the spatial distribution of risk – or creating a new riskscape pattern – within cities. This process, which Connolly calls 'urban risk shift', has deep implications for the efficacy of contemporary plans and the future directions of urban climate planning.
