The Civil 1982 Grad class gathered for its 40-year reunion on September 24 2022. Turnout was good: 32 grads and several partners from our graduating class of about 75.
After some of us attended the Applied Science Dean' BBQ, we met at the freshly painted engineering cairn on Main Mall. It is great to see the tradition is still going strong after many decades. Accompanied by three impressive current Civil Engineering class leaders as tour guides, we toured the new Engineering Student Center, CEME, and the new-to-us Engineering Design Centre: home to concrete canoes, concrete toboggans, and other cool student projects.
CEME lecture halls seemed unchanged after 40 years (including Dr. Roy Hooley’s classroom where he practiced his unique end-of-class ritual). The Civil Engineering Club room upstairs, although new to us, showed a familiar level of innovation and initiative that reflects the Civil Club culture we fondly remember. Afterwards, we convened at the Point Restaurant Lobby Bar in the new Marine Drive Residence complex. We enjoyed food, drink, and the overdue company of our classmates. A highlight was the “one-minute” updates each of the grads gave as they summarized their last 40 years. Our class exhibits resilience, intelligence, and vast experience in their varied careers.
At this stage in our lives, many of the class are moving into semi and full retirement, while a few remain working full time. I think all agreed that 10 years is too long between reunions, and there was interest to re-convene formally every 5 years, and informally more often. We hope to see more members of our class for our 45-year reunion in 2027! For their kind attention to the success of our reunion, we offer many thanks to the Alumni Engagement team in the Faculty of Applied Science. CIVILS!!!
