New director for UBC School of Nursing

Professor Suzanne H. Campbell, Ph.D., WHNP-BC, has been named director of the UBC School of Nursing, effective July 9, 2012– June 30, 2017. She comes to UBC from Fairfield University School of Nursing, Fairfield, CT, U.S., where she recently served terms as Associate Dean for Academic Programs and as Interim Dean.

Campbell earned a BS and MS in Nursing from the University of Connecticut and a Ph.D. in Nursing from the University of Rhode Island. She obtained a post-master’s certificate as a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner from Boston College, and has been certified as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant since 2001.

An expert in women’s health issues and a leader in curriculum development, Dr. Campbell has led major educational technology and clinical simulation development initiatives and has overseen successful accreditation reviews from such organizations as the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).

“The Faculty of Applied Science is delighted to have Dr. Campbell join UBC,” says Associate Dean Sally Thorne. “Her proven track record as an academic and administrator coupled with her passion for global healthcare, health equity, educational innovation, and professional advocacy align beautifully with the mission and mandate of the School of Nursing, and will strengthen its capacity to achieve its established vision.”

Campbell has served as Director of the Fairfield Graduate Program, and Project Director for the establishment of its new Learning Resource Center. She also served as Director of Research and Special Projects to the Board of the International Lactation Consultant Association. She has served on the Accreditation and Approval Review Committee on Education in Human Lactation and Breastfeeding and was elected into the Nursing Academy of the National Academies of Practice in 2010. She is co-editor and author of multiple chapters in the popular text Simulation Scenarios for Nurse Educators: Making it Real (Springer).

Campbell will join the faculty of one of North America’s leading academic nursing centres and work with a vibrant team of UBC nursing scholars in such fields as social justice and health care reform. Her expertise and enthusiasm for the scholarship of teaching and technological enhancements in health professional education strongly align with the School of Nursing’s innovative undergraduate and graduate programming. Through her academic leadership, the UBC School of Nursing will be ideally positioned to sustain and extend its capacity for meaningful impact on health and health care locally, nationally and internationally.
